How Famous Companies Got Their Names?

We always wander about the names of famous companies.........So now here goes some interesting facts about the names of Companies around us-

Nike: Named for the greek goddess of victory. The swoosh symbolises her flight.

Skype: The original concept was ‘Sky-Peer-to-Peer’, which morphed into Skyper, then Skype.

Mercedes: This was actually financier's daughter's name.

Adidas: The company name was taken from its founder Adolf (ADI) Dassler whose first name was shortened to the nickname Adi. Together with first three letters of his surname it formed ADIDAS.

Adobe: This came from the name of the river Adobe Creek that ran behind the house of founder John Warnock.

Apple Computers: It was the favourite fruit of founder Steve Jobs. He was three months late for filing a name for the business, and he threatened to call his company Apple Computers if the other colleagues didn't suggest a better name by 5 o'clock.

CISCO: It is not an acronym as popularly believed. It's short for San Francisco.

Compaq: This name was formed by using COMP, for computer and PAQ to denote a small integral object.

Corel: The name was derived from the founder's name Dr. Michael Cowpland. It stands for COwpland Research Laboratory.

Google: The name started as a joke boasting about the amount of information the search-engine would be able to search. It was originally named 'Googol', a word for the number represented by 1 followed by 100 zeros. After founders - Stanford graduate students Sergey Brin and Larry Page presented their project to an angel investor; they received a cheque made out to 'Google'. So, instead of returning the cheque for correction, they decided to change the name to Google.

Hotmail: Founder Jack Smith got the idea of accessing e-mail via the web from a computer anywhere in the world. When Sabeer Bhatia came up with the business plan for the mail service, he tried all kinds of names ending in 'mail' and finally settled for hotmail as it included the letters "html" - the programming language used to write web pages. It was initially referred to as HoTMaiL with selective uppercasing.

Hewlett Packard: Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard tossed a coin to decide whether the company they founded would be called Hewlett-Packard or Packard-Hewlett.

Intel: Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore wanted to name their new company 'Moore Noyce' but that was already trademarked by a hotel chain so they had to settle for an acronym of INTegrated ELectronics.

Lotus (Notes): Mitch Kapor got the name for his company from 'The Lotus Position' or 'Padmasana'. Kapor used to be a teacher of transcendental Meditation of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

Microsoft: Coined by Bill Gates to represent the company that was devoted to MICROcomputer SOFTware. Originally christened Micro-Soft, the '-' was removed later on.

Motorola: Founder Paul Galvin came up with this name when his company started manufacturing radios for cars. The popular radio company at the time was called Victrola.

Sony: It originated from the Latin word 'sonus' meaning sound and 'sonny' as lang used by Americans to refer to a bright youngster.

SUN: Founded by 4 Stanford University buddies, SUN is the acronym for Stanford University Network. Andreas Bechtolsheim built a microcomputer; Vinod Khosla recruited him and Scott McNealy to manufacture computers based on it, and Bill Joy to develop a UNIX-based OS for the computer.

Apache: It got its name because its founders got started by applying patches to code written for NCSA's httpd daemon. The result was 'A PAtCHy' server - thus, the name Apache Jakarta (project from Apache): A project constituted by SUN and Apache to create a web server handling servlets and JSPs. Jakarta was name of the conference room at SUN where most of the meetings between SUN and Apache took place.

Tomcat: The servlet part of the Jakarta project. Tomcat was the code name for the JSDK 2.1 project inside SUN.

C: Dennis Ritchie improved on the B programming language and called it 'New B'. He later called it C. Earlier B was created by Ken Thompson as a revision of the Bon programming language (named after his wife Bonnie).

C++: Bjarne Stroustrup called his new language 'C with Classes' and then 'newC'. Because of which the original C began to be called 'old C' which was considered insulting to the C community. At this time Rick Mascitti suggested the name C++ as a successor to C.

GNU: A species of African antelope. Founder of the GNU project Richard Stallman liked the name because of the humour associated with its pronunciation and was also influenced by the children's song 'The Gnu Song' which is a song sung by a gnu. Also it fitted into the recursive acronym culture with 'GNU's Not Unix'.

Java: Originally called Oak by creator James Gosling, from the tree that stood outside his window, the programming team had to look for a substitute as there was no other language with the same name. Java was selected from a list of suggestions. It came from the name of the coffee that the programmers drank.

LG: Combination of two popular Korean brands Lucky and Goldstar.
Linux: Linus Torvalds originally used the Minix OS on his system which here placed by his OS. Hence the working name was Linux (Linus' Minix). He thought the name to be too egotistical and planned to name it Freax (free+freak+x). His friend Ari Lemmke encouraged Linus to upload it to a network so it could be easily downloaded. Ari gave Linus a directory called 'Linux' on his FTP server, as he did not like the name Freax. (Linus parents named him after two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling).

Mozilla: When Marc Andreessen, founder of Netscape, created a browser to replace Mosaic (also developed by him), it was named Mozilla (Mosaic-Killer, Godzilla). The marketing guys didn't like the name however and it was re-christened Netscape Navigator.

Red Hat: Company founder Marc Ewing was given the Cornell lacrosse team cap (with red and white stripes) while at college by his grandfather. He lost it and had to search for it desperately. The manual of the beta version of Red Hat Linux had an appeal to readers to return his Red Hat if found by anyone!

SAP: "Systems, Applications, Products in Data Processing", formed by 4 ex-IBM employees who used to work in the 'Systems/Applications/Projects' group of IBM.

UNIX: When Bell Labs pulled out of MULTICS (MULTiplexed Information and Computing System), which was originally a joint Bell/GE/MIT project, Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie of Bell Labs wrote a simpler version of the OS. They needed the OS to run the game 'Space War' which was compiled under MULTICS. It was called UNICS - UNIplexed operating and Computing System by Brian Kernighan. It was later shortened to UNIX.

SCO (UNIX): From Santa Cruz Operation. The company's office was in Santa Cruz.

Xerox: The inventor, Chestor Carlson, named his product trying to say 'dry' (as it was dry copying, markedly different from the then prevailing wet copying). The Greek root 'xer' means dry.

Yahoo: The word was invented by Jonathan Swift and used in his book 'Gulliver's Travels'. It represents a person who is repulsive in appearance and action and is barely human. Yahoo! founders Jerry Yang and David Filo selected the name because they considered themselves yahoos.

3M: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company started off by mining the material corundum used to make sandpaper. It was changed to 3M when the company changed its focus to Innovative Products.

VOIP stands for Voice over Internet protocol is a communications protocol that allows for telephonic communication via the Internet.

NEW VERSION TO THE RAM

New Technology will boost Tablet & Server performance

Introducing "DDR4 RAM"

The upcoming shift from Double Data Rate 3 (DDR3) RAM to its successor, DDR4, will herald in a significant boost in both memory performance and capacity for data center hardware and consumer products alike. The DDR4 memory standard, which the Joint Electronic Devices Engineering Council (JEDEC) expects to OK this summer, represents a doubling of performance over its predecessor and a reduction in power use by 20% to 40% based on a maximum 1.2 volts of power use.

What are the experts saying?

“It’s a fantastic product, increasing the amount of memory and the bandwidth of that memory is going to have huge implications.” said Mike Howard, analyst with market research firm IHS iSuppli.

“With DDR4, we’re certainly seeing some larger power savings advantages with the performance increase. For DDR3, we see stacking going up to four chips (4H), [but] for DDR4 this clearly will go up to eight chips stacked on top of each other (8H), which means that, using a 16Gbit memory [chip], manufacturers will be able to produce 128Gbit memory boards” said Todd Farrell, director of technical marketing for Micron’s DRAM Solutions Group.

Advantages of DDR4

In Mobile & Tablets

The jump from DDR3 to DDR4 as greater than any other past DDR memory evolution.
It’s hard to pick just one attribute. DDR4's significant reduction in power needs means that relatively low-priced DDR memory will, for the first time, be used in mobile products such as ultrabooks and tablets. Today, mobile devices use low-power DDR (LPDDR) memory, the current iteration of which uses 1.2v of power. The next generation of mobile memory, LPDDR3, will further reduce that power consumption (probably by 35 percent to 40 percent), but it will likely cost 40 percent more than DDR4 memory. LPDDR memory is more expensive to manufacture.

Servers

The impact that DDR4 will have on the server market could be even greater. DDR4 is one of these devices where you’re getting a lot of benefits at once. Power reduction is key. But at the same time we’re reducing power, we’re getting a substantial increase in performance. They kind of go hand in hand. For example, if you run DDR4 at the same bandwidth as DDR3, you can achieve a 30 percent to 40 percent power savings. Running at its maximum bandwidth, which represents a doubling of performance, DDR4 will use the same power as its predecessor.

TAJ MAHAL(INDIA)-BEST WONDER OF WORLD

INDIA is the nation where "TAJ MAHAL" is situated which is WORLD'S BEAUTIFUL WONDER. It has been chosen by NEW7WONDERS FOUNDATION based in Zurich, Switzerland. Selection was done among 200 monuments from world wide and winners were announced on August 7, 2007 in Lisbon(Portugal). The "New7Wonders Foundation" claimed that more than 100 million votes were cast through the Internet or by telephone.

REASON FOR WINNING:-

The Taj Mahal is a unique, massive, impressive architectural accomplishment of it's time, 55 meters high. The Statue of Liberty could fit inside it easily (46m).
It is considered by many who have seen it to be the most beautiful building ever built. The date of its completion plus the reason for its existence, add to the wondrous nature of the structure.
The building of the Taj Mahal was ordered by Moghul ruler Shah Jahan to commemorate the memory of his late favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The project required the labor of over 22,000 workers and 1000 elephant's, including many fine artists and architects. It was begun in 1632, and completion of the entire complex took about 22 years.
At last, the main reason of winning was the support for TAJ MAHAL by its own country people. A lots of thanks to the people who supported TAJ MAHAL by voting that made India famous world wide with this incredible monument. PROUD TO BE INDIAN.

MY ENGINEERING LIFE

 THE REAL SCENARIO:-

Everyone says that "the people who are lucky gets what they want". Now this is my time of being lucky. Really I felt lucky when I got chance to read COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING(CSE) because COMPUTER was my only lover since childhood. To be honest, our love is two-sided......just joking. Anyway, I got admission in TRIDENT ACADEMY OF TECHNOLOGY, BHUBANESWAR and about this college I don't want to comment, reason is I am here in this college because I deserve it, that's all.
Main gate of Trident Academy Of Tech(TAT), bbsr

 MY STRUGGLE:-

After joining B.Tech in CSE trade I have a lot of  hard work to do, to answer the criticisms that I and my parents confronted for my decision to work in COMPUTER field. Many of my relatives asked & ordered not to join CSE but I was computer enthusiast that made me stand still and I will never ever forget the way my parents supported me with my decision, inspite of  all that ridiculous criticisms.

MY B.TECH FIRST DAY:-

The day I joined in Trident was unforgettable because of the scenario that Mr. B.B.Panigrahi sir(Trident's Owner) created by his phenomenal personality. I was turned to dumb by his voice capability & communication skills and I better believe this feeling of mine would be definitely going through all the students present in the auditorium.
Then students who opt for hostel were escorted to Trident Hostels and finally I got my room and roommates in Trident BH-8
BH-8 TRIDENT HOSTEL

To be frank, our room was the best room of BH-8, it is not only me who says this rather it is been accepted by all the hostelers.
Our room in BH-8 and my bed

And moving to my roommates, SURAJ  & AMAN  they are guys born with personality. They are my best roommates I have ever dreamed.

VIRUS (WHAT IS COMPUTER VIRUS?)

VIRUS stands for "Vital Information Research Under Seize". A computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself and infect a computer. It can spread from computer to computer when its host is taken to the target computer through medium of floppy disk, CD, DVD or USB and also can be sent over nerwork or internet.

TYPES OF VIRUS:-

Not all computer viruses behave, replicate, or infect the same way. There are several different categories of viruses and malware. Below I have list and discuss some of the most common types of computer viruses.

Trojan Horse:
A trojan horse program has the appearance of having a useful and desired function. While it may advertise its activity after launching, this information is not apparent to the user beforehand. Secretly the program performs other, undesired functions. A Trojan Horse neither replicates nor copies itself, but causes damage or compromises the security of the computer. A Trojan Horse must be sent by someone or carried by another program and may arrive in the form of a joke program or software of some sort. The malicious functionality of a Trojan Horse may be anything undesirable for a computer user, including data destruction or compromising a system by providing a means for another computer to gain access, thus bypassing normal access controls.

Worms:
A worm is a program that makes and facilitates the distribution of copies of itself; for example, from one disk drive to another, or by copying itself using email or another transport mechanism. The worm may do damage and compromise the security of the computer. It may arrive via exploitation of a system vulnerability or by clicking on an infected e-mail.

Bootsector Virus:
A virus which attaches itself to the first part of the hard disk that is read by the computer upon bootup. These are normally spread by floppy disks.

Macro Virus:
Macro viruses are viruses that use another application's macro programming language to distribute themselves. They infect documents such as MS Word or MS Excel and are typically spread to other similar documents.

Memory Resident Viruses:
Memory Resident Viruses reside in a computers volatile memory (RAM). They are initiated from a virus which runs on the computer and they stay in memory after it's initiating program closes.

Rootkit Virus:
A rootkit virus is an undetectable virus which attempts to allow someone to gain control of a computer system. The term rootkit comes from the Linux administrator root user. These viruses are usually installed by Trojans and are normally disguised as operating system files.

Polymorphic Viruses:
A polymorphic virus not only replicates itself by creating multiple files of itself, but it also changes it's digital signature every time it replicates. This makes it difficult for less sophisticated antivirus software to detect.

Logic Bombs/Time Bombs:
These are viruses which are programmed to initiate at a specific date or when a specific event occurs. Some examples are a virus which deletes your photos on Halloween, or a virus which deletes a database table if a certain employee gets fired.

TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR SYSTEM SPEED

Top Ten Tips To Improve System Speed

1. Let your PC boot up completely before opening any applications.

2. Refresh the desktop after closing any application. This will remove any unused files from the RAM.

3. Do not set very large file size images as your wallpaper. Do not keep a wallpaper at all if your PC is low on RAM (less than 64 MB).

4. Do not clutter your Desktop with a lot of shortcuts. Each shortcut on the desktop uses up to 500 bytes of RAM.

5. Empty the recycle bin regularly. The files are not really deleted from your hard drive until you empty the recycle bin.

6. Delete the temporary internet files regularly.

7. Defragment your hard drive once every two months. This will free up a lot of space on your hard drive and rearrange the files so that your applications run faster.

8. Always make two partitions in your hard drive. Install all large Softwares (like PSP, Photoshop, 3DS Max etc) in the second partition. Windows uses all the available empty space in C drive as virtual memory when your Computer RAM is full. Keep the C Drive as empty as possible.

9. When installing new Softwares disable the option of having a tray icon. The tray icons use up available RAM, and also slow down the booting of your PC. Also disable theoption of starting the application automatically when the PC boots. You can disable these options later on also from the Tools or preferences menu in your application.

10. Protect your PC from dust. Dust causes the CPU cooling fan to jam and slow down thereby gradually heating your CPU and affecting the processing speed. Use compressed air to blow out any dust from the CPU. Never use vacuum.

RAM IS THE WORKING AREA (DESKTOP) OF THE CPU, KEEP IT AS EMPTY AND UNCLUTTERED AS POSSIBLE!

TOP ROMANTIC HOLLYWOOD MOVIES I WATCHED

1.  IF ONLY

*ING -
It is one of the saddest movie ever I have watched with lots of melancholy screenplay. Awesome acting by both the character (Ian and Samantha) that will definitely turn your eyes wet. This movie totally focuses on true love and loneliness. Before watching this movie, just think about your life after losing your true love.
I cried a lot by last dialogue of the hero and the way scenario flipped which was never expected. Watch this movie or you are going to miss a lot.
MY RATING - 9.5/10

*ING-
Ryan Gosling as character "Noah" impressed me a lot the way he use to impress the girl. Initially, movie starts with a old man narrating a story to an old women and taking her into a different scenario where love birds NOAH and ALLIE exist. Then, movie flows with romance, romance converting into break-up, then break-up converting into........oops ! ! there is a tricky screenplay. So, do watch this movie I swear you will be lost in love and romance.
I enjoyed each scene thinking about the climax and definitely you will, so do watch this movie and also it is A MUST WATCH MOVIE.
MY RATING - 9.5/10

*ING-

Lucy plays an impressive character having short term memory loss. Henry Roth, who falls for her and apply all the “odds and even” tricks to make her fall in love with him again and again though she forgets her every morning she wakes up. Being a fantasy movie I enjoyed a lot. To know more about the reason of memory loss of Lucy and tricks of Henry to bring her back, just watch the movie.
I was really mesmerized by this movie and phenomenal acting by both. Just Loved this movie every time I watched.
MY RATING- 9/10

*ING-

"In a husband-wife relation there may be a lots of fight and cursing but above all Love remains still" this is the first scene of the movie. The very next day, death touches husband and for wife there remains no room for happiness. To prove "love remains" husband has planned everything to make her wife happy even after his death by surprises. Just watch the movie and feel the surprises.
I loved this movie due to concept of "loving after the death".
MY RATING - 8.5/10

*ING-

"Different girl with different mindset" is the character of Sara who misses her D.L. test for Nelson, a guy who possess frustrating career of advertising. Sara feels Nelson needs some help and offers him to live with her through out NOVEMBER. But Nelson scoffed at her but later on agreed to her offer. Life changes for Nelson but knows the truth about Sara and a sad ending.
This movie really touched me when I knew other side of Sara and seeing Keanu Reeves in this character was really awesome.
MY RATINGS - 8.5/10

 6.  WICKER PARK
 *ING-
Love at first sight for Matthew when he saw Lisa on a video tape and cajoled her very soon. And then lost her for some reason. More he tries to find her more he get detached due his friend's lover. Now question arises why? ok....watch this movie and make yourself comfortable to feel the LOVE SQUARE.
One of the best screenplay I have ever seen and worth to watch this movie.
MY RATING - 8/10

*ING-
Keira Knightley (Ruth)

It is the movie based on ORGAN DONATIONS where children are taught to donate their Organs in their adult age. Tommy, Kathy and Ruth are three childhood friends who finds themselves at this school and later on Love triangle takes place between them.
According to me, this is one of the saddest movie with very sad endings.
RATINGS - 7.5/10

8.  FLIPPED

*ING-
Inspired from a novel where two CLASS 8 students fall in love. Interesting part was the love at first sight for girl but ignorance by boy. Later on it FLIPPED ignorance by girl and love by boy.
I liked this movie a lot because it will definitely take everyone to their school life. And little "school drama" from this movie is appreciable.
MY RATING - 7.5/10

9.  THE VOW

*ING-

Based on true story. Just think if your beloved forgets you due to the accident met by her. Then????

*ING-

"Serendipity" one of my favorite word which mean "a fortune accident". This is what the movie is. Movie flows completely through fortune. They met fortunately, they separated fortunately and at last they "___________" fortunately. Watch the movie and believe in fortune done.
I completely believe in fortune so I admire this movie and its scenes. Watch this movie if you believe in destiny.
MY RATINGS - 7.5/10

*ING-
This movie presents Charles Dickens story in a modern format where a painter(Finn) falls in love with a girl(Estella) in his childhood. Separation increases when Estella moved to other country for higher studies. Then they met and again met in some odd way, while on the other hand it was planned by someone else.
MY RATINGS - 7/10

12.  ONE DAY
